In 2016 based on our focus group with uneducated women who are homemakers in Block 32, Trilokpuri we started with a sewing centre with the objective of empowering the trainer, Shahnaz who was a local resident so she could continue running it as her own entrepreneurship. The Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia provided support through lectures of issues related to women’s education, feminine hygiene and financial independence. Renuka Savasare, designer from NID conducted a community skill assessment and identified women with skills of specialized embroidery.
Shahnaz(on the right)’s sewing centre
We are proud to have Shahnaz take ownership in just 4 months and started her own the centre to her own place once she had enough women trainees. FFEC guided her and also donated
sewing machines to get started.
Our plan is to continue engaging with women of this community and identify women like Shahnaz who have the drive, commitment and passion to realize their dream and FFEC shall hand hold them in their journey by connecting them to resources such as small loans.
