Kadam: Empowering lives through education and legal identity

Home Kadam: Empowering lives through education and legal identity

In Delhi, numerous families migrate from diverse regions in search of a better life. However, upon arrival, they often encounter difficulties enrolling their children in schools. Picture the anxiety of relocating to a new area, only to confront obstacles in accessing something as fundamental as education. This is the stark reality for families in communities like Trilokpuri, where children face challenges finding schools willing to accept them.

Trilokpuri is a dynamic resettlement colony in East Delhi, pulsating with life and opportunity. It holds a special place in our hearts as it’s not just a community; it’s a home to resilient individuals who have faced numerous challenges. Trilokpuri traces its origins back to 1975-76 when it became a safe haven for those displaced by the clearance of slums in Delhi. Predominantly inhabited by low-income minorities, including the Valmikis (Dalits) and Muslims, the community thrives amidst the backdrop of unorganized sector jobs like rickshaw pulling, carpentry, and sanitation work. Women often secure employment as domestic workers in nearby neighborhoods such as Mayur Vihar.

Trilokpuri is interwoven with migration stories, with families originating from various states across India. However, this constant movement disrupts the educational journey of children who find themselves navigating different schools in Delhi. Recognizing the educational hurdles faced by these children, we embarked on a mission to make a difference.

In 2016, after a thorough assessment of the community’s needs, Kadam Learning Centre was established. Our mission: to provide children aged 5-18 with the educational support necessary for success. We offer remedial classes, foundational learning, and computer classes to equip them with essential skills for the future.

Yet, our dedication extends beyond the classroom. Understanding that some children slip through the cracks, either remaining unenrolled or dropping out due to various reasons, we took action. In 2023, we partnered with Bucket List to launch a pilot project aimed at identifying and supporting these vulnerable children. Through meticulous mapping and collaboration, we facilitated legal identities for 136 children and successfully reintegrated 171 students into schools within Trilokpuri. Our efforts have yielded tangible results, boasting a 100% retention rate.

Building upon this success, we are delighted to introduce Project Roshni in 2024. This in-house initiative aims to streamline enrollment processes, provide legal documentation support, and offer remedial classes to further minimize dropout rates. With Project Roshni, we aspire to illuminate the path for every child in Trilokpuri, ensuring they receive the support needed to thrive academically and beyond.
